The Pony Express started here

In April 1860, the Pony Express launched its first westward run from a stable here in St. Joseph, and the city has embraced that heritage ever since — the Pony Express National Museum downtown tells the story of the riders who carried mail across the frontier in a relay that, remarkably, only lasted about eighteen months before the telegraph made it obsolete.

A river town, built on the bluffs

St. Joseph grew up along the Missouri River in the 1840s, and the river shaped the city's development for the next century and a half — from steamboat trade to the railroad and stockyards era that followed. The bluffs overlooking the river still define a lot of the city's older neighborhoods, including the historic homes around Museum Hill.

A working history worth remembering

St. Joseph built a substantial meatpacking and railroad industry through the late 1800s and early 1900s, and that working-city heritage still shows up in the architecture and layout of the older parts of town — it's part of why so many of the renovation and cleanout jobs we handle involve genuinely old homes with real stories behind them.
